Meet James, 22 years old from UK.
“I've got a love for music and film, and somehow managed to attain a follower base on a Spotify playlist dedicated to The Weeknd's discography. Hip-Hop and R&B is my lifeblood, but I like a wider set of music and I like to think I can appreciate good music when I hear it!”
What is the sountrack to your life?
Soundtrack to my life. This is a difficult one. Despite my love for Hip-Hop and R&B, one song that never fails to please is Lonely Hunter by Foals. I love their take on rock, and their progressive style. On the flipside, The Weeknd's King Of The Fall was the perfect promo for his KOTF tour, whilst album openers like A$AP Rocky's Palace make Hip-Hop what it is today. So they'd come close behind. Then maybe Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence.
Most annoying song in the world?
Most annoying song in the world. It has to be the overplayed student ballad that is Mr Brightside, either that or anything by the Bee Gees. I wouldn't normally hate on the Bee Gees, but I had to listen to their "Greatest Hits" and high pitched vocals one too many times.
Music or Lyrics? Why?
Lyrics. I have a love for songwriters and producers alike. Lyrics can and have made history though. Certain artists have a way with words. Technical rappers like Eminem can use beat breaks and flow to make almost anything rhyme, while rappers like Nas, Mos Def, and Tupac are able to create hits whilst talking about the problems of society. Which was especially difficult to do whilst making hits when Hip-Hop and Gangsta Rap was emerging. A really interesting read of lyrically diverse rappers: https://pudding.cool/projects/vocabulary/index.html Notice how diverse Wu-Tang are with their lyrics. It's what I think made them one of the best rap groups of all time.
Favourite Artist. The Weeknd. House of Balloons is what got me into Contemporary R&B and Hip-Hop.
One Artist to Interview. A$AP Rocky hands down. He seems like on of the most down to earth and genuine people on the planet and would love the opportunity to chat music with him.
Last concert you went to?
Last Concert. Was meant to be AJ Tracey last week, but it got cancelled. So it was Everything Everything a few months ago. Honestly one of the best live performances. Didn't top the Starboy tour though!
