Meet Melissa, a 33-year-old Spotify playlist curator from Baltimore, Maryland.
“One of the primary ways I feel empowered is by hearing from other empowering women. When I need to get my workout on, I let Lizzo, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and other musical goddesses be my personal coaches. I hope other listeners draw the same inspiration from this mix.”
If you had the chance to interview an artist, who would it be?
JANELLE. I love my girl Janelle Monae. She's so creative and weird in a very specific, Janelle kind of way. I admire how she's always been a powerful, positive influencer for women by promoting acceptance and defying society's definition of femininity. I'd kill to sit down with her and ask her about her life, her musical process and where she draws her inspiration since she's remained relatively private for most of her career.
Do you have a hidden talent?
Reading people's facial expressions. I pick up on very minute indicators of emotion. It's a blessing and a curse.
Do you play any instruments? If no, which instrument do you wish you could play?
I don't! I used to play the piano but gave it up around High School. I always wanted to be a singer but was born with a truly horrendous singing voice, so dance became the way I expressed myself through music. I think it's why this playlist is so damn good — it's full of very danceable tracks.
Do you have a favorite quote?
Not particularly. My memory is shit. Usually, I can barely remember what I did yesterday.
What's more important to you: music or lyrics? Why?
I honestly can't choose between the two. They're both critical components of a good song. For this playlist, I focused mainly on tracks with empowering lyrics but also a rhythm your body can sync with while running or working out.
