Meet Olivia, a music lover from New York.
“I’m a student at Cornell University currently pursuing a degree in Biology! Music has always been one of my favorite ways to relax and have fun whether it’s blasting 90’s girl pop alone in my apartment, dancing with my friends, or performing, as I’m part of an acappella group on campus, The Chordials! As a kid, some of my favorite things to do were play guitar and go to dance class. I always loved to write really, really terrible music growing up. Now I mostly just sing covers and put music together in playlists on Spotify!"
What is the soundtrack to your life?
Probably anything by Lizzo. Her music is crazy empowering and fun (not to mention inclusive and body positive, which is always a plus) and that’s the kind of vibe I like to carry with me every day.
What is the most annoying song in the world?
Definitely “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke. Songs that stand for rape culture and demean women are not my jam!
What’s more important to you? Music; or Lyrics? Why?
I’m definitely a sucker for lyrics. They can be so clever and artistic. The way I relate to songs is definitely through its lyrics, and good artists have such a way with words. Some of my favorite lyrics of all time that have both guided me and made me cry throughout the years can be found in Joni Mitchell songs and Fleetwood Mac songs.
This is a tough one and it changes so often! Right now I’m really enjoying anything by CLAY, particularly “orange” and “a million pieces.”
If you had the chance to interview an artist, who would it be? (Dead or alive)
Absolutely Amy Winehouse. I feel like she had so much more to say with her music, and I would love to ask her about the inspiration behind classic songs like “Valerie,” and “Me and Mr Jones.”
My last concert was an awesome performance by Justin Nozuka in Manhattan. It was a super cool intimate space and I got to meet him after his set! If you haven’t checked him out, I’d highly recommend it! He’s a crazy talented guy with a really unique voice and he writes really powerful music.
