Meet Courtland, a 18 year old Spotify playlist curator from Leesburg, VA…
“I’m currently a student at Virginia Tech and I enjoy hiking, running, being outside, and traveling.”

When & why did you make your playlist?

I think I made it around 2 years ago on a snow day where school was cancelled for the day. I wanted a play list for this specific feeling I got on snow day mornings when I hung out in the kitchen with my dad and brother making pancakes, listening to music, and drinking hot chocolate. So it really started off completely as a playlist for myself, but a lot of people ended up liking it, which was really cool.

Describe your playlist. Perfect situation(s) for jamming include:

What I like about how this playlist turned out is that it has some variety in terms of genres, but all the songs give me the same happy and light feeling. I would say that they’re all just really easy songs to listen to. As I kind of already said in the previous question, I originally made this playlist for quiet Winter Sunday mornings, spent with my family in our kitchen making waffles or pancakes and listening to good music. However, I’ve also found that I like listening to it whenever I want a light, chill vibe, like sunny afternoons doing homework or just hanging out.

What was the best concert you've ever attended and why? (Include as many details as you'd like: city / venue / when / with whom...)

I think the best concert I’ve been to was George Ezra with my cousin in I think 8th grade. It was one of my first concerts and I’d gotten really into George Ezra’s music and songwriting. It was at the 9:30 Club in D.C., which isn’t a huge venue so even though we were probably somewhere in the middle of the crowd, we were still so close to the stage which was so awesome. It was a really cool crowd and felt kind of intimate, like we were all friends gathered to watch George sip a beer and play his guitar. He’s also just a cool and entertaining guy so he made it a very fun show to watch.

What kind of music / artists did you grow up listening to?

I guess I grew up listening to a lot of oldies because my dad still uses all his records and record player from when he was in high school and college. I didn't really start enjoying and getting into his stuff until I was in Middle School though.

Who are your all-time favorite artists and why?

I would say George Ezra is one of my all time favorite artists because I really love how he's such a good story teller with his songs. I also really love The Beatles which is cliche but they're just a classic and I could listen to their stuff all day. I think one of my all-time favorites is also Bob Dylan because he's one of the first older artists that my dad introduced me to that got to me look into more stuff from the 60s and 70s. I also love Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin because I just love the passion and energy they sing with. My favorite current artist is Chance the Rapper because his songs have a lot of variety and I like his style.
