Meet Jenna, 19 years old from Raleigh, North Carolina.
“I was doing my makeup one day and listening to trap music, specifically "I Like It" by Cardi B! I was listening to the lyrics and just thought about how trap and hip-hop are such a big thing for women right now. Not only is it clearly very fun, but a lot of rap has become very empowering for women; it's a confidence booster. In "I Like It", Cardi says, "Bad bitch, make 'em nervous," and I just felt so close to and inspired by that lyric, and I wanted to make a playlist of other songs that made me feel that way. The playlist was actually originally named after that lyric! But I changed it to have a more universal and comedic appeal. Being a "baddie" or a bad bitch is such a big movement for women right now. Everyone may not want to call themselves that, but it's the confidence and fun behind it that means so much for those who like it. The music in my playlist supports that!”
What is the soundtrack to your life?
I actually have a playlist of songs I really relate to! ("About Me:" on Spotify). I have a lot of different moods. But any song about being cool, beautiful, and understanding yourself is all that I'm about.
The Front Bottoms!
If you had the chance to interview an artist, who would it be? (Dead or alive)
I'd probably interview SZA or Lana Del Rey. I really liked their music growing up, but it wasn't something I deeply related to until I got older. Their music obviously has a universal appeal for girls who know that they're amazing but still get treated poorly, and girls who are still figuring everything out. I'd like to hear their stories.
What is the best concert you have ever been to?
I've actually never been to one! I'd love to see The Front Bottoms, Cage The Elephant, Drake, or Migos in concert, however, among others.
Do you have a favorite quote?
Probably something like "If you're going through hell, keep going." I've never been a big quotes person.
Do you play any instruments? If not, any you would love to learn?
No, but I've always wanted to play the drums!
Do you have a life slogan?
"Promise to do better." It's a song lyric from SZA's song, "Prom". I started getting really into that song at a low point in my life. I was in a bad relationship and I wasn't acting like myself. I was so unhappy. I remember hearing the song and that lyric in particular and just related so heavily. I think about it anytime I feel myself failing or getting to a low place. The quote is like saying, "okay, you know that this is bad, but change is coming, just learn and do better next time." It reminds me to always tough things out and improve.
What is the most annoying song in the world?
Any song sung by Bruno Mars! His music is super overplayed.
What’s more important to you? Music; or Lyrics? Why?
Both are equally important. I was in choir for about 12 years. My teachers always stressed the proper tones and dialect when singing, but you also have to understand that with all songs, no one is going to know every word to a piece the first time around. Sometimes it's just the sound of a person's voice and the instrumentals of a song that provoke emotion in a person. It's later learning the lyrics to a work that really make it have meaning for the person listening.
