Angry feminist aesthetic

Meet Serena, a 29 year old Spotify playlist curator from Australia.
“I was looking for a playlist that captured a modern current wave of feminist punk and indie artists. I found pop playlists and playlists of older feminist punk, but nothing like what I was looking for, so I made my own. It gained a following quite organically and I'm very glad to have helped others find that type of music.”

What music did you listen to growing up?

Mostly stuff like hardcore, metalcore, punk, skramz and emo. My favourite bands in high school included Big Black, Norma Jean, Circle Takes the Square, Funeral for a Friend and AFI.

What is your favorite quote?

I'd be very hard pressed to pick just one. One I especially enjoy though is "Good stories are bad lives" - Car Seat Headrest.

If you could interview any artist, dead or alive, who would you interview and why?

Probably Steve Albini, because he had such a huge influence on the DIY movement in music.

Who do you want to see live in concert before you die?

So many. At the moment I'd really love to see Julia Jacklin, Nicole Dollanganger and Lemuria.

Who are your more recent favorite artists?

Camp Cope, Petrol Girls, Zheani, Ceremony, Julia Jacklin, Diiv, Car Seat Headrest, Nicole Dollanganger, The Shiverettes, Nerve Quakes, Boat Show, Self Defense Family, Downtown Boys, Big Brave, No Sister, Mere Women, Black Marble, Oathbreaker, The Mountain Goats, Miss June, Apes of the State, Lingua Ignota, Cerce, Listener, The Mountain Goats, Lil Frex, The Regrettes, Phoebe Bridgers, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Worriers, Diet Cig, I Hate Sex, Childbirth, Breakfast Muff, Girlpool, Comadre, Turnover, Single Mothers.

Why do you like listening to playlists?

I find they're a great way to help me get into (or through) a certain mood. Playlists with strong lyrical themes help process my emotions.

What genre of music is your favorite to listen to?

Depends on the mood I'm in. I listen to a really wide range of stuff, but my most listened genres are probably punk, indie pop, lofi, shoegaze, doom and emo revival. I also like hardcore and hip hop, but generally only if it's queer and/or feminist. I'm on an early 2000s witch house binge at the moment.
