Meet Montinique, a 29-year-old from Syracuse, New York.
“I am a regular attendee of AfroPunk and a playlist curator. I truly think they should hire me to do their official playlists for Spotify, so I made this playlist to shoot my shot!”
What music did you grow up listening to as a young kid?
I grew up in Queens in a house with my great-grandma, grandma, mom, and sisters. Hymns and Hip Hop were all I knew! My mom was such a Hip Hop head, so the sounds of LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, and Big Daddy Kane would constantly be layered over the hums of church songs by my grandma and great-grandma.
What is the best concert you’ve ever been to?
BbyMutha at Songbyrd in Washington, DC! Hands down the best concert ever! Her energy enraptured everyone in there, and it felt like a giant house party!
Do you play any instruments? If no, which instrument do you wish you could play?
No, but I've always wanted to play the drums. Drums move the hips and the heart! The drummer is the dopest member of the band: you get all the benefits of the fame and music, but can almost be anonymous and live a regular life. Besides that being a black girl on the drums... I'd be legendary!
Name your top 3 favorite artist and why?
This changes... but Brent Faiyaz, BbyMutha, and Syd (of The Internet). All for the same reasons: they departed from what the industry attempts to force Black artists to be in order to be successful and did it their way. They didn't swim towards the mainstream, the mainstream shifted to include them. Iconic!
What is your favorite quote?
“If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive.” - Audre Lorde
