Meet Shelby, a 25 year old Spotify playlist curator from Salt Lake City, Utah.
”I started this playlist in March of 2018 after alternative rap like "emo rap" and "cloud rap" started becoming pretty mainstream thanks to stars like Lil Peep and Lil Uzi Vert. I listened to this type of music constantly, especially after discovering artists like Yung Lean and nothing, nowhere in 2015ish, but most artists were super underground with hardly any listeners. I had friends left and right that wanted to find more music like these popular artists, but didn't really know where to start or how to categorize them - so I started a playlist, and circulated it a bit to people that were interested.”
Describe your playlist. Perfect situation(s) for jamming it include:
This playlist could be called many things, but mostly it all falls into Emo Rap / Cloud Rap / Vapor or Darkwave Trap. It's fantastic for just chilling, for parties, for when you're depressed or in your feelings. This type of music has a very dynamic quality to it that makes it fit in the background for just about anything.
What kind of music/artists did you grow up listening to?
I mostly grew up listening to different types of alt rock, especially emo and related genres like pop punk or post-hardcore. I'm a huge hip hop head now too, but there hasn't been a hip hop subgenre that's resonated with me quite as much as emo rap does. This is obviously true for plenty of people based on how much the genre has exploded over the last couple of years.
Any interesting artist(s) you've just started listening to recently?
Yes! Right now I'm obsessed with Kevin Abstract & girl in red. I know they're pretty popular, but I didn't start listening to either of them much until a month or 2 ago.
Tell us about you! Occupation, hobbies, interests, a quote, your site, etc. -- anything you want to add to introduce yourself at the top of your post!
I don't have a ton to say here, but I'm Shelby, I'm a 25 year old fraud investigator, I'm in school for enviromental science. I also do some promotion for local bands & venues on the side, and wish Spotify would pay me for the countless hours I spend curating playlists for myself and others, lol.
